Technician (Buildings)

This is offered on a full-time, fixed term contract for 12 months.

The closing date is 12 May 2017 at 17:00

Salary: £18,368 per annum

Tate St Ives encourages a greater understanding and enjoyment of modern and contemporary art in the unique cultural context of St Ives and also manages the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Following a major project the extended Tate St Ives reopened on 31 March 2017 and this autumn we will open our new gallery space, dedicated Learning area and new displays. As you can imagine, it's a particularly busy time for our Operations team, hence the need to recruit a Technician (Buildings) to join them.

Making sure Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum are presented to the highest possible standards is the challenge here. That means taking responsibility for the day-to-day maintenance and statutory testing at our buildings. One minute you could be preparing a gallery for opening, the next carrying out some minor repairs or general maintenance work. Monitoring the condition of the buildings and art work, packaging and storing items, liaising with contractors, helping to set up rooms for exhibitions and providing technical support in areas like carpentry and decoration – all are aspects of this varied role.

As well as an aptitude for the practical and good manual skills and dexterity, you’ll need great attention to detail and the ability to work flexibly on a range of tasks to tight deadlines. We’ll also be looking for a good understanding of best working practices and health and safety requirements and a pragmatic approach to problem solving. An interest and commitment to the work of Tate is important too, as is a willingness to work across a 7 day rota pattern with occasional evenings. Someone who is as happy working both as part of a diverse team and unsupervised on delegated projects, you have good verbal communication skills and are comfortable discussing your work with the public.
