British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is seeking a talented and experienced Communications & Engagement Manager to coordinate the delivery of the strategic Communication & Engagement plan for a new polar ship for Britain.

Commissioned by NERC, built by Cammell Laird and operated by BAS, the new polar ship is part of a major Government investment in UK research infrastructure that will enable frontier science and innovation that meets societal needs, and promote UK interests in the Polar Regions.


You will play an active role in a joint campaign to deliver stakeholder and public engagement in the commission and operation of this new ship. Communications professionals from BAS, NERC, BEIS, Cammell Laird and STEM Learning Ltd are working in partnership. Your role will be to co-ordinate the work of these partners and to contribute to internal and external communication and engagement activities during a 2-year period. This will include supporting the delivery of high-profile engagement events including the launch and ceremonial naming of the ship. You will be creating and managing online editorial content and a social media campaign. You will be the first point of contact for media enquiries about the research ship. You will work directly to the BAS Head of Communications who leads the strategic Communications and Engagement campaign.

You will play a full role in the BAS Communications Team, support Operational teams across BAS and undertake other tasks as requested by the BAS Head of Communications.


A degree or equivalent professional accreditation/experience (at least 3 years) in PR/Communications/Marketing


- Co-ordinate the work of the Communications & Engagement the Polar Ship Programme Board sub-group
- Create editorial content about the ship and the science it supports for publishing online, in printed materials and for background briefing papers
- Manage relevant pages within the BAS website (WORDPRESS)
- Contribute to the planning and delivery of high profile stakeholder engagement events
- Work with colleagues in the BAS Communications team and Project Management teams to plan and deliver internal communications activities that promote positive staff engagement
- Work with other members of the BAS Communications team to identify opportunities to promote the new ship within BAS’s existing communication and public engagement plans.
- Promote scientific user-community engagement through an e-newsletters and other forms of communication
